If you have the Windows 2000 Professional Product Upgrade disc, you only need a "qualifying product" to install it. The qualifying product does not actually need to be....ahem....installed.

Qualifying products include Win 95 or 98.

Well here is my story... I have a melinium upgrade, but he has to have at least 98 as the os to upgrade to melinium. And the router needs 98 se, 2000 or xp.

Not sure what to do... currently he is running 95. I have a dell computer and he has a packard bell that is about 9 years old so my software is not compatible.

you shouldnt have to upgrade to W98 first to upgrade to win2000

here is a link showing the upgrade paths for win2000 http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;232039

is win95 on the computer now?

I dont really think the router should need any particular operating system....maybe it is some software that comes WITH the router that needs w98 or newer.

I think possibly in your case I would just buy Windows Xp home edition and then just format the hard drive and do a full install of XP Home. The only catch is youd have to save whatever you have on the computer now because you will be formatting (wiping it out) during setup.

Do you know the specs on the computer...like the cpu speed and the amount of memory on it?

You probably want at LEAST 256m of memory to run xp...and something like at LEAST a 400 or 500mhz processor.

you can get windows xp home for something around 90$ here for example http://www.saveateagle.com/micwinxphome1.html

I wouldnt bother with a lot of upgrades to the operating system...upgrades are sort of a hit or miss deal...its always better to do a fresh install.

-------

is the router already there? I would try to get it going first with w95.....we on this forum can help you with that if you want to try.

I would just stick with 95. On that machine, there is no advantage upgrading to Windows 2000 or Millennium. The router is transparent to the computer, so it shouldn't care about the OS.

yeah i agree because i have my linux machine on my router even though the software isnt compatible with linux.... i dont know tho it still might be difficult to get that connection started up on w95 possibly?
