Kids Strange Networking Problem...

Got a machine here at work that needed to be redone. Got everything loaded and basically cloaning the other 45-50 machines we've got here, yet this one is acting a little differently.

I can't browse the network. I'm logged into our domain, I can ping other machines, if I type in a machine name into the address bar I can browse to it...but if I go through network neighberhood it says that the network is not available.

Almost all the machines on our network here are running 98SE. There's a few running XP and the machine in question is running 98SE.

Anyone seen this phenemenon before or know how to remedy it?

Have you installed File and Printer Sharing? If so, it initially sounds like a Master Browser problem. Give it a few hours (left on) and it should correct itself.

You could also just disable it's ability to be the Master Browser which often helps too.

To disable Master Browser, go to Control Panel>Network>File and Printer Sharing>Properties>Advanced, select Disable.

Ok. I just solved my own problem. lol.

Apparently, even though I'm logging in through a domain, the workgroup also needs to be the same as the other machines. I didn't even think about that since I'm logging in through a domain but...who knows. <shrug> So I changed the workgroup to be the same as the domain and voila!

Anyways...problem solved. lol.

yes, the Master Browser only serves information on one workgroup/domain name
