Pentium 4 processor problem

Hey all

(First time posting) I wanted to swap out the heatsink that came with my P4 with another one. Everything was going according to the directions, until I pulled off the heatsink+fan, and the chip was apparently "stuck" to the bottom.

Now I when I put it back in, my system doesn't boot. I have an AX4SPE Max (Aopen) motherboard, and it tells me that my CPU has a problem. I'm not so sure what's wrong -- did I bend some pins, or maybe damage the socket?

Any suggestions as to how to fix this would be great.

~Eric

First thing I would do is to remove the cpu and examine the pins. Are any broken or missing? Did you remove the old hs/f and replace it with a new one? How? Are there any scratches on top of the cpu?

It def. seemed as if there were bent pins -- I think I fixed that (the processor goes in now). Unfortunately, that still doesn't seem to be the problem. There aren't any scratches on either the sides with pins, or on the side without ...

The processor definitely gets hot -- any other things that it could be? I'm currently trying to run it with the new heatsink/fan.

Did you apply a thermal compound such as Artic Silver between the heatsink and cpu? The Artic Silver website has a tutorial on how to apply it. If the cpu is running to hot the motherboard could be shutting it down.

I am indeed using the Arctic Silver stuff, and I'm almost certain I followed the instructions correctly. At first blush, it seems to be a genuine processor problem. There's definitely no evidence of the motherboard shutting down the CPU, unless it managed to overheat in about 12 seconds (which I have no idea -- it might for all I know)

Thanks Jarhed!

Can you get into your bios? If so go into it and check that the settings are correct for your cpu.

I'd check the pins again. When that happened to me it took awhile to find and fix them all. I'll never leave a stock Intel heatsink on again for more than a couple of weeks. With AS or silicone they come off easy.

Oh, About those 12 seconds.
I destroyed a P3 850 in 2 seconds without a heat sink.
I burned the heck out of the tip of my finger too.
Don't ask. I'm stupid sometimes

Hey guys, thanks for the input -- it was a couple of bent pins that I didn't quite catch on the first time 'round. So everything's all nice and working.

Didn't know about the 2 second thing. I should watch that, hahaha.

Thanks again--~Eric
