Outdoors HELP-IT shutsdown but not off

I have a problem with my HP and WinME..It use to shut OFF, now it just shuts down. I use to get a message "safe to turn monitor off". Not now. It is still running when I do the shutdown process but it doesn't go all the way off.-can still hear it running even with the lights out. I have to shut it off like I am doing a hard reset, then turn monitor off. I updated a driver a few months back and it corrected it. Then I had to redo all and it went away. Don't know where it was, printed the instructions once, but my friend (?) threw it away. I am afraid that I am harming the computer when I have to do that sort of shut off. I hope that one of the smart people out there can help me. Thanks

What type of video card do you have? Do you have a network card installed if so what kind?

Okay, I had the same thing happen to my laptop. It was a fresh Windows XP copy. The deal is that sometimes XP doesn't accurately detect your computer type, or the information might change. No harm is done to your computer by keeping it this way. To solve problem, just re-install or load in the HP restore CD ( since u have HP). That should do it.

I have tried to restore the computer and it doesn't work. Also, I am not computer intelligent, so I don't know how to check and what type of video card I have. It is driving me nuts, when I first got my HP it worked fine. Then all of a sudden, it didn't. I know that it's not harming my computer, its just annoying that I had it once and now I don't. Like I stated, I updated a driver and it fixed it, then it didn't later. Who knows!

ME is the one OS I have never worked with so I not exactly sure how to tell you to check but it should be close to this.

Right click on the My Computer icon on your desktop. Left click on Properties. If there is a tab for Device Manager left click on that.
If it says Hardware click on that then click on Device Manager. Once in Device Mnager double click on Display Adapters. This will tell you what kind of video card you have.

While you are in Device Manager, if you use a network card (that is if you connect to the internet useing DSL or cable) double click on network adapters and tell me what kind of network card you have. If you are useing a modem then skip this part.

You could try reinstalling the old driver. I build my own computers so I don't know if HP keeps on file drivers for archived systems. If I didn't have the disk that came with the computer when it was new I'd go to the HP web page and see what they offer for support in terms of drivers. But I vaguely also remember Me had shut down problems period with AMD CPU's because they dumped their L2 cache too fast during shut down. You haven't done a hardware upgrade have you.

I don't think so Wally, anyway to check and see? The only thing I did was update a driver and bam! Gone! I have tried HP and they want me to purchase a new restore disk and the one that I got from them wasn't right when I bought the machine. Ticks me off the say the least. Have had problems with this mess for almost 4 years. The book that I got with this hunk of junk didn't even match the commands that showed up! They have helped me, but they want a fortune to help. What happens, when I hit shut down, the "tower" shuts off, but still runs, then I have to do a hard reset (hold button in until clicks) then turn off monior. Where before, when I would hit shutdown, it would prompt me, safe to shut monitor off and then everything stopped. The motor, sounds like a fan, keeps running until I hold the button on tower I hear it shut off. i hope this makes sense!

What is the name and/or model number of your HP? I need to look it up to see whether or not it has onboard video. Did you buy this new? Has a new video card been installed on it?

It almost sounds like the system is going into 'Stand By' mode. You'll probably have to get some help to do this, but you can try two things. Right click on your desk top and drag down to 'Properties' and left click, You'll get a 'Display Properties' box with 5 tabs on it. Click the 'Screen Saver' tab and you'll see at the bottom a button that says 'Power' Click the button and then look at the bottom again and it will say 'System Stand By' click the little arrow and highlight 'Never'. after you've got 'never' in the dialogue box clicl 'OK' on both dialogue boxes, do not close them with the little 'X' in the corner.

Otherwise if this don't work you can try shuting off the system restore monitoring function. BTW do have a restore date in the 'System Restore' before the driver snafu?
