Printer Help ASAP

I'm over at someone's house trying to install a Brother MFC4600 or a HP DeskJ 697C. I can't get either one of them installed for some reason. The brother does not get detected at all and the hp one gets detected and I can install drivers for it just fine but when I try to print I get a Printers Folder Error that says "There was an error found when printing the document "Test Page" to LPT1:. The device is not connected....Do you want to retry or cancel the job?"

I just don't get it. It's a Gateway PERFORMANCE 733 (serial # 0020071086) and I just finished installing win2k on it (winme before) I was told the printer was working fine 2 days ago. There are no conflicts in device manager and I can't seem to figure out what to do. Everything else works perfectly.

EDIT: When I do a dir > lpt1 and press enter I get "Access denied" if that means anything to anyone.

Any ideas? I need help ASAP because I need to head back to school in 2 hours.
