help configing my router

hello,

I'm trying to have my computer and my laptop share internet access from a cable modem through an internet gateway/router. My cable modem will be linked to the wan port of the router and my pc and laptop to 2 of the 4 ports in front. Now im trying to ping the router at 192.168.0.1 but i get request timed out.

I was able to ping the router at one point when i was trying before this morning. At that time even though i was able to ping it, I wasnt able to configure it through a web browser at http://192.168.0.1 (maybe i need to disable proxy on internet explorer?) NOW, i can't even PING the router and i'm pretty sure ive hooked it up correctly.

Ive frantically used dhcp and static assign IP methods to try and get it working but it's not.
using a dummy 192.168.0.2-5 for the IPs
255.255.255.0 as the subnet mask and
192.168.0.1 as the gateway

I'm using D-Link Cable/DSL Internet Gateway DI-704 Revision A i guess and both systems are Windows XP Pro.

Please help with any tips. Thanks all in advance.

ALSO, if anyone has tips to set up filesharing on windows XP i'm a little confused. i have two windows xp machines. and i set up user accounts on each of them, do they have to be of a certain username? when i try to connect to the other computer on my network through using \\IP it prompts me up for a password but the username is Guest
as in COMPUTERNAMEIMTRYINGTOLOGINTO\Guest and i can't change the username value

if anybody has any tips for windows filesharing in windows XP please post, or even a online tutorial that covers windows XP - XP filesharing and this issue of the Guest username not being the computer name (and if it has to be, not really sure)

I suppose if i ever get my networking running ok i can try ftp, but I was just curious on how to get this working.

Thanks all for your time.

What OS is your laptop??? My laptop had not default conecction so when i went to configure my router i had no problem. my 1st suggestion is that if you have had any previous internet software disable go into your network settings and disable or better yet delete those connections so only your network card connection shows. also make sure that you are not using a crossover cat5 cable. that would be a big no no.

I hope i was some help im still taking cisco acadamey classes so bear with me. i know how dlink is a pain but i like them over linksys

is updating the firmware absolutely nececessary. i was at the d-link page before and downloaded the install guide, firmware, printserver stuff for my router. but now i would just like to be able to make sure i can talk with it properly. there is only one network configuration on this computer and on my laptop there is sorta vmware installed that made 2 internet connections connections which i disabled but i will unplug the laptop for now.

Currently, i just want to be able to ping and configure the router using its webserve and possibly share files in between these two computers. then I will worry about the internet connection.

nah lol im definately not using crossover cable.

Thanks for the link. My Laptop is WinXp Pro as well as my desktop

best bet is to buy a crossover cable for file sharing the easy way if you just are going to use 2 computers. and by the way if one computer with windows xp is connected to the internet and it has another ethernet port u can connectanother windows xp computer via a crossover cable and the two computers will self configure. thats the way i have my 2 computers. the only reason why i have a router to begin with is for my Game Hosting Server.

i only have 1 nic in each computer, and no crossover cables
plus the router offers more protection
