About lag: Video card, Chip speed, or both?

The game in question is XMP...

I guess my question is can the video card and processor cause the lag, or is it the fault of the DSL connection?

For example, if I shoot at a guy in spot A. Has he really (due to my lag) moved past spot A to spot B?

Thanks in advance...

Its probably the server you are playing on. Does it lag like that in every server you go to?

I really can't tell if I'm lagging. From a theoretical standpoint, can I be behind in frames what the other players with hotter cards are seeing, thus making me see and aim where they were?

Am I making sense?

connection speed will play a much larger role then video card when it comes to multiplayer lag... obviously if you are playing a a gf2 then you might want to up your video card. and usually when you lag, you wont just be a couple frames behind, things will get jumpy instead. and if you guy starts getting jumpy, im sure the other people will let you know...

Matrox G400 32mb aint the greatest for 3d speed in todays games. Nice looking sure. Fast -no. A Geforce 3 (original)will put the slam down on it and that is two generations old. Get a card that is within the last two years of production with 64mb minimal. 128mb would be best if in market for card now.

I'm looking at either a ATI 9800 Pro 128 or a 9600 128. Not sure if the 9800 is going to be worth the difference in money. Plus I'd like to get coupon for HL2 to play when I'm 90 years old!

I guess my ol' Matrox has pretty well reached it's capacity for today's games...
