for clarification: an "external" modem is one that is not installed directly into the pci slot. an "internal" modem is installed by taking off the cover of the puter and installing it directly onto the motherboard.
I think you were confused there.
I also am trying to enable internet connection sharing (ics) using windows 2kpro, using a switch to connect three puters.
dial-up is slow, but I'm willing to give it a go. I've found tons of info about this type of ics, but have yet to get it to work

do know that creating a network with a switch isn't hard to do, cause I have one set up now. it's the sharing of the internet connection I'm still trying to figure out.
