Thoughts on Athlon 64's

I'm considering a Athlon 64 as a processor option for the laptop I will probably be buying next month.

Does anyone have any thoughts on those CPU's? Any ideas when MS will release a 64 bit OS? Are they going to be here to stay, or a fad that fades out quickly?

64 bit processing is anything but a fad. MS is supposed to bring out their XP64 sometime this year but I havent heard a date yet. If battery life is your game, I would get a P4 m.

ok

had............still have in a box...........

p4 2 ghz (400fsb)

on..........im845gl............

with..........64mb rad 9000 (pci)........and 512 mb pc2100

lovely reliable rig............

bought p4 2.8 800 fsb with ht and 512 mb pc2100.....fx 5200

rubbish...........took it back to the shop got money back

bought......for the same price......rip............short for ripley...........mean @ssed alien fragger..........

rip.

amd a64 3000+

on asus kv8 dx...........

with 512 mb pc 3200 and fx5900xt

5.1 sound........through i-trigue 2.1speakers?............rip rocks!!!!!!!!!

intel are obsessed with clock speeds...and exorbitant prices........this lil cheapie a 64 ticks along at 2.0 ghz and sits right up alongside the overpriced ht p4s and even the 3.2 extreme

if you want performance at an affordable price that allows u to add some nice stuff to your rig to compliment the cpu.......get an a64................true intel have seen the light and are following amds 64-bit lead but i'd be amazed if intels 64's are as keenly priced as amds gems

I've always run the AMD chips. Every PC I've built has one. Good stuff. I don't really care about battery life, so long as it isn't under 2 hours a charge.

Does Linux take advantage of 64 bit processors?

I've got an eMachine M6805 lappy with the Athlon64 3000+ in it. I get about 2.5 to 3 hours of battery life out of a charge with normal surfing and work.

Fire up a game (MOHAA, BF1942) and the battery pack will drain down in about 1.5 hours. Yes, this thing will play either of these games with ease with all the detail settings on MAX

Go for the M6805, you won't be disappointed

Linux has been able to take advantage of 64bit processing for a couple years now. The only major hurdle you run into with that is 64bit compiled programs and some hardware support issues but thats soemthing you always have to watch for.
