Will 800MHz P4 run on 533Mhz board?
Three questions regarding running a P4C on a 533MHz board:
Will a P4C 800Mhz FSB run OK @ 533 MHz, if the board is only rated at 400/533? (There are no BIOS upgrades to accept 800 MHz CPUs).
I guess the "microcode" may not be recognized either?
Board accepts PC2100 or PC2700 DDR RAM.
If there is an option in the BIOS to lock the AGP/PCI @66/33 mHZ, and I can bump the FSB to 200 (x 4), will this configuration OC and run @800 MHz, running PC3200 DDR, provided the proper CPU and RAM voltages are recognized, or at least, can be manually applied?
This board supports HT and Dual-Channel, but the only HT CPU
I can find that supports 533 MHz, is a 3.06 GHz, and I really didn't want to spend $225+ for the CPU, for this particular build.
Thanks for any input.
- Bill

Dont know for sure but two things can be the answer to your question:
- It will but the CPU speed will fall to (EDIT*)533MHz
- It wont work with this board.

sounds like a lot of monkey business there..trying to put a sq peg in a round hole.
You already have the 800fsb cpu? Can you just get another motherboard instead?

Are you sure you've got the right processor ?
Intel P4 processors began at 1.5ghz. An 800mhz would be a P3, which wont even fit on your board.

You're right, Jon:
It is a bit of monkey business. . .I just feel adventurous. Maybe the HT just isn't worth the trouble. I just bought a 2.4B ($135) that should work fine. I also have a 2.8C - I guess I can experiment - I might even learn something. I just don't want to destroy anything!
Thanks for the input, guys.

I think it would clock your FSB down to 533 Mhz if you used this processor, I used a P4B in a 400Mhz only board and it ran fine it just clocked the processor FSB down to 400 which brought the cpu speed down from 2.4Ghz to 1.8Ghz. Nice cool temps too

Right, Manford:
I completely forgot about that! And the clock multiplier on the P4 cannot be changed, correct?
Thanks.

yea, they cannot be changed. only the FSB can be used to underclock and overclock. Same with the P4 Celerons.

Thanks for the info.
