scientific atlanta dvr 8000 question

I am trying to get video recorded on the dvr transferred to a pc. A couple of web sites have stated that is possible But i cannot figure out how to do it and the sites do not assist at all. The firewire ports do not seem to be functioning nor does the usb port. Wondering if I can remove the HD from the unit and put it into a PC. I read something about a security feature on the dvr that does not allow video recorded on one dvr to be played by anything but that dvr. Any ideas? has anyone successfully got video of of the DVR.
