Any thoughts on NEC DVD+/-RW (ND-2500A)?

Newegg has this drive for $102. DVDRHelp.com rates this one of the top DVD/R drives.

Anyone have thoughts on this drive/price?

I was holding out for the Pioneer A07 but the price of that unit does not seem to be falling very quickly.

I got it from Newegg 2 weeks ago. Great Drive. I've been able to burn 4X DVD +Rs at 6X with no problems. I even ran some CompUSA 2.4X cheapies at 4X. I'm using Nero 6 Ultra with DVD Shrink. Haven't burned a coaster yet. I ordered mine from Newegg on Monday, and had it in my machine Wednesday afternoon. Go for it!

Not to scare you away from the drive, but...

Tempted by the price I recently purchased the NEC 2500a from Newegg and installed it in my new build. After the first night, it consistently gave me "cylic redundancy error" messages on known good discs and I also had a lot of corrupted burns. It also recognized DVD-Rs with data on them as blank discs and DVD Shrink wouldn't work with it. I used Ritek 1x and 4x discs as well as Memorex. I tried different software, setting it as a master/slave, and even switching out the IDE cable, but nothing worked.

I RMA'd it back to Newegg for a Pioneer DVR107 and it has worked absolutely perfectly - not one coaster and it reads all my discs. It was worth the extra money in my opinion. I've heard good things about the NEC as well and I probably just got a bad one, but something to consider in your decision...

I've been pleased with our Pioneer 106, maybe I'll just hold out for the A07/107.

Thanks.

I have been very pleased with my Liteon LDW811s DVDRW. 3 coasters to start out but they were my fault, once I figured out what I was doing wrong everything has gone perfectly. I have been backing up movies and also use +RW's for HD/data backup.

shadyb1, I'm sorry you had a bad experience, but it sounds like you got a DOA drive. I'm going on week 4 with mine, and not a problem. I've tried +R, -R, +RW, and -RW. Even CompUSA cheapies work.
