Installing Red Hat Linux 4.2

Help!

I tried to install RH 4.2 Linux on a Toshiba laptop, but it did not start the machine. I had made boot and supplement disks as their web site said to, but that didn't work either. The screen wouldn't go on.

Sincerely,

Jerry Szyka jerry_szyja@yahoo.com ...also

why are you trying to install an old version like that?
RedHat is up to version 9 now (we won't go into details of current affairs with versions)

Have you tried Knoppix? If you're new it maybe a better option until you're more comfortable.
(www.knoppix.org I believe)

So you put the CD in to boot to the CD but it doesn't boot?
How old is this laptop? OLDer machines did not have the ability to boot to CD
OR its not set correctly in your BIOS to boot first to CD
OR its a corrupted cd.

With Linux packages come Linux, the core of the OS and then variations on the additional programing that go into making up a PC OS.

Sincerely,

True, linux is the OS.
Here is the difference though, the kernel that you will use in 4.2 will be VERY outdated and lack most if not all modern hardware support. Let alone the advances made in process handling and I/O.
