Tosh laptop seized after Win 95/98 Recover Dsk attempt

I need some help;

I have a Toshiba 4000CDS laptop about 6 years old. After I trie to reinstall Win 95/98 from Microsofts' Recovery Disk the machine gave a loud click and blanked the screen. That was just after I said no to reloadin '95. I did that because a previous attempt to do so left off when , after it reformatted the HD and erased Win 2000 Pro, it said it could not load command.com..there was no start-uo after that. On the subsequent attempt I was trying to get it to install Win 98, but it just froze everything.

Can anyone help. I do believe the machine is a good one.

Sincerely;

Jerry Szyka

Well have you tried this:
Get into the BIOS. Set it to boot from cd.
Put the win install disc into cd drive.
Reboot.

?

The screen is blank. There is no light there. The access key fo the set-up screen does not get that going.It is as though the screen is turned off.

Sounds like backlight burnt out perhaps.

I have an old Toshiba laptop whose HD failed (click of death). Trying to figure out whats wrong with it I learned that toshiba laptops store part of their bios on the hd. My toshiba will not let me access the bios, and will show the same symptoms as yours.

Good luck with your Tosh

Thank you elmers

Like your name sake, you have something to offer.

Further, your communication was a breath of fresh air.

Further, perhaps manually entering machine code or electronic code from the keyboard 3.5, c-d. or an external source would handle the matter, or that this route could be used to rewrite the HD bios program/file/?. These are only logical 'guesses', but there should be access routes.

Sincerely,

jerry... Is it possible for you to hook up an external monitor to the laptop?

Also, sometimes when the backlight burns out, you can still see the image i.e. "C:\" if you look very closely at the display.

Thanks, but try Gomers suggestion. Are you sure there is no hard disk activity (noise) after you reboot ?
