laptop, major problems please help!!

Well heres what happened. My computer froze. I was unable to reboot with control alt delt, so i was forced to do a cold shutdown.

When i turned the computer back on the initial screen popped up, where it tell you what type a processor you have. Then a a black screen with some red symbols popped up and the computer froze again.

Now when i turn the power on i see the green light for the power, the fan spins, and the cd rom drive spins, but nothing else. I have nothing on my display...and the hard drive light does not come on like it should when it boots.

I finally took it to a shop, they said they changed the processor to no avail, and the memory...but still nothing.

However, they did say that they got it working a few times. ones was after putting in a cd in the drive. they managed to get it to start booting..and got into the bios.but then it locked up. the other time was after letting it sit over night, they turned it on and the display poped up but it locked up after the memory test was ok

Does anyone know what could be the problem?? any help would be great!

thanks

andrew

i was actually just surfing the web. umm a few hours earlier i was playing a game....but thats nothing new.

The place i took it to went through the whole insides of the computer. I dont know why after it sat around overnight...(oh and the computer was really cold when this happened, they must of left it near a window) it would start up, but then crash. They said they changed most of the main part to the computer...but with no avail.

If it was a bad motherboard battery, would the computer still come on from time to time?? just curious...

Thanks for any help you guys can provide.

Andrew

Doesnt sound like a battery. If it was a battery, you could boot off a floppy like a Win98SE Startup disk. I get the impression that there is a heat issue (based on the "overnight" description. However, if the shop replaced the cpu and the ram that leaves the hard drive and the mobo. If you can boot off the floppy sucessfully, I would guess that the hard drive is at fault. If not, I think you're looking at a mobo which basically means the laptop is toast. Sorry Dude!

I'm curious about the "red" symbols you mentioned. Can you be more specific?

well the computer doesnt have a floppy drive, but i think they tried a cd rom boot disk. I know they tried a different cpu when i was there, but i dont know if they used the right one or whatever..... They said the computer had a regular AMD processor in it, not a mobile one. so they just took it out and put in a duron processor and then turned it on. Is that all you would need to do?? nothing with jumper or anything??

Well the red symboles were like this

% & * % " 3 % % % ^ & " 3^ &

across the top of the screen...then i seem to remember some lines below that...

Could i have fried the processor?? even though it suppose to shut down when it gets to hot....maybe it didnt do it in time and is now cooked?? ---

thanks again

Andrew
