background process (i think) problem

hi sorry if this is in the wrong section, i just wouldn't know where else to put it.

i am running windows XP and occasionally i come across a media file that I cannot play and i get an error prompt or media player just sits there thinking for the longest time trying to play the file. However that is the least of the problem. It is then as if there is something running in the background maybe media player trying to play the file or codecs? but part of my system slows down dramatically. and i now can't delete that one video file.

I know that i can move everything out of the folder and delete the folder and that will in essence delete the file, but i was wondering if there is a cleaner solution to getting rid of the file. And also what is happening to the system when it is slowing down, and what should I do to correct this?

Thanks in advance.

Im not sure about the specific problem..but I would run adaware to make sure the system is clean from spyware.

www.lavasoftusa.com get the free one

Its hard to tell whats goign on in the system
Check Task manager (right click on your toolbar and click "task manager" to see whats' eating your CPU

Definately check out adaware as suggested above... may also want to update your Virus scanner (That you DO have right?!?!? ) and do a full scan.
Media File that doesn't run does certainly scream virus.
do a google search on trendmicro housecall if you don't have one to do a online search
You can also check out www.grisoft.com for a free virus scanner you can download.
