quick question ( xP )

my m8 asked me last night if he could update from ME to XP, and keep all his data.

I told him to ask here, doesnt look like he did. So ill ask for him.

He wants to just change to xp but keep all his info. Can he or will he need to format the hard drive?

Yes he can, but I am a bit insecure if you just can do that with Windows XP Home and not Windows XP Professional. I will look that up first. Its strange how simple things get lost in your memory. I swear that I would have known this when I started at TechIMO

Although I would recommend him to do a clean install and format the hard drive. Why? Because his system would work better. Less problems since its not an upgrade from an old (and buggy) version of Windows.

You can sometimes lose data on an upgrade.

He should back up anything critical.

*Information achieved*
You can upgrade with both Windows XP Home and Professional edition. The only ones you cant upgrade with Windows XP Home are Windows NT 3.51, 4.0 and Windows 2000 Professional. Here you see the chart from Microsoft showing you the upgrade possibilities. HTH's

thanks very much. I just gotta get hold of him to tell him now. heh.

Could any of you answer a quesiton of mine also?

i want to know if when i upgrade the computer in a few months, i intend to buy another ( larger hard drive )

can i like have a version of XP home on each? I want to be able to have my own drive + operating system and be able to choose which to load when i turn on the computer. Mainly because i get blamed for absoloutly anything that goes wrong with our computer. And my family fill it with junk.

As long as it can legitimately be activated - yes.
