Systems Win ME and wireless

I finally got some "cheap but it works" wireless equipment for my computers. For my ASUS P4P800 Deluxe I used the on board WiFi connection and had good success with my laptop and tower connecting. I then installed a card in my Windows ME computer. The install went smoothly but now I am running into a few problems/questions.

One problem is that after I got it all installed and I rebooted the ME computer it asked for my User ID and Password to log on. I hit cancel and was successful at logging in. My question is why does it now ask for a PW and User ID everytime I reboot? Anyway to change this?

The other problem I blame on ME. When I had a hard line network I had problems recognizing other computers. It was hit and miss which is what bugged me, I could hit the "ENTIRE NETWORK" button and it would occasionally throw and error. Other times it connected to other computers with no problem. Well with the wireless network I get a great connection but I am still getting the hit and miss nature of connecting to other computers. I was able to see the other 2 computers one time but have gotten the error message since then, even when the connection to the wireless is listed as excellent. Anyone have a possible solution or a suggestion about what to do?

Thanks,
Greg

I think if you just select Windows Logon in the Primary Network Logon in the network control panel, this will go away.

For connecting to other computers, you'll need to make sure they all have the same workgroup and default login. Then each needs file/printer sharing enabled and have at least one share enabled.

Well each computer has shared folders so I know that is not the case. I will try the Network Logon "windows logon" and see if that works.

Have you tried formatting the hard drive that has windows ME on it? That's where I would have started. Maybe replace it with an OS that is worth something. Don't you have an extra copy of XP pro around the house somewhere?

that's kinda harsh advice f1oored. I know of a few (make that VERY few people ) that use ME on a daily basis with little to no problems ( a rarity tho)

Actually I know it is kinda harsh but extremely true. I find it funny if anyone would defend this particular OS. I lauged my butt off when I read your "VERY few people" b/c I have never had any luck with this OS and f1oored knows this, that is why he is on a crucade to rid me of it once and for all so that I will stop bugging him for tech support.

EDIT/UPDATE:
Well I checked and it was set to Windows Logon already. I am getting the "PW and USER ID" on the startup of the ME computer regardless if I have a network connected or not. This all happened though after the installation of the wireless card so I know it had something to do or rather changed a setting that my 10/100 card was not set to.

Ok, I think if you just enter a name when you get the login, then leave the password blank, you will not be prompted again. But you must log in in order to access the network.

By the way, I've used ME on one of my home computers for three years with nary a problem. I have an XP disc but just don't see the point in "upgrading".

Use the microsoft client for networks if you want to use your LAN resources. On a 9X/ME network your login user/pass combo isn't relevant unless you password protect your shares. You could download and use something like TweakUI to cache your credentials. Seems like a silly thing to complain about to me but different strokes I guess.

As far as the Network Neighborhood issue: Disable the master browser on all buy one machine and boot that machine up first if you reboot your machines regularly (since you use ME I'd think that is a big affirmative) You can do this from the network properties, specifically File and Print Sharing properties menu. You could also install NetBEUI to help with name resolution issues or do the smart thing and just forget about Network Neighborhood/Places. Just map your drives using the UNC path, or search for computer from the start menu. Network Places is a joke and always has been, including the more contemporary OS's from Redmond.
