How to set the correct speed.....

MOBO is ASUS A7V8X-X
CPU AMD 2500 Barton
Memory is 256MB DDR400(PC3200)

I just built my first computer....with your help of course. The problem I have now is Sisoft reads it as 1.46 GHz. I believe it should be at least 1.83GHz. These are my BIOS settings. Thanks in Advance.

CPU Speed <manual>
CPU FREQ MULTIPLIER <14.0x>
CPU External FREQ <133/33>
Memory FREQ <333>
CPU Vcore settings <auto>
CPU Vcore <1.65>

The "133" in CPU External FREQ should read 166

The multiplier should be set to "auto" or manually at 10x

It needs to be 166fsb and multiplier at 11.

I bet there is a jumper on the motherboard to choose 166fsb

maybe, if its adjustable, put the multiplier on 11 then shutdown and look for the jumper.

(unless it is changable in bios.....download and look in the manual to find out or just look on the motherboard)

This Place is the GREATEST!!! I'll go do that right now...er...as soon my my better half is thru w/ that @#$% card game

BTW IS that all there is to do if I we're to Over Clock??? Of course I would get a better fan... but am I going down the right track. I've seen post where so and so gets his AMD 2500 up to 3200. HOW did he come up w/ the 3200??? where's the math

Thanks again

Change the 166 to 200. Provided you've got the memory that can handle it, and a board that can oveclock, that should be it.

well usually to overclock you just increase the fsb...say from 166 to something faster....200 would be a big jump and maybe the memory wouldnt go that fast.

but you could go to , say, 176 and that would be 1.936ghz for example 176x11=1936

When u increase the fsb u also increase the speed the ram and also pci cards run at.....so at some point something locks up and wont boot or is unstable.

Thats where the multiplier comes into play....if its unlocked you can change it so that you get more from the cpu while keeping the fsb within reasonable speed

for example if you tried to got to 180x11=1980mhz and u wanted more....but when you tried 181 it wouldnt boot.

ok, at that point you could change the multiplier to 12 and drop the fsb to 166x12=1992mhz

That way u r overclocking the cpu hard but not overclocking the pci cards etc very hard.

Lots of times it is the memory that is the hold up...so if you are trying for high oc, at first you want the memory timing settings to be really "conservative"...like instead of cas2 run it at cas3 (I dont know all the settings, lol...sometimes they have word names for them, like "conservative" etc in the bios)

If you bump up the fsb and try to reboot and it locks up...you probably have reached a limit and you have to reset the bios and start again, remembering where the limit was.

When you hit a limit and you think its the cpu, you can increase the v-core voltage SLIGHTLY..but it'll run hotter so u gotta watch that.

As long as that board supports a 200MHz bus, or has a 1/5 divider, the PCI bus will be unchanged. Infact, going to something like 176 will actually increase it becuase it will still be at the 1/4 divider. Tee memory is PC3200 so it should be able to run at 200 provided the timings arent set too tight. The 2500+ also shouldn't have an issue running at 200, i've yet to come accross one that did anyway.

Chances are that if this is a newer barton, it is locked, even an older one would be locked with the MB he's using, so multiplier change isn't feezable without physically unlocking it.

Im not sure about the dividers etc...

here are a few reviews..in reviews they usually do some overclocking so he can get some good details

Also, they do make adapters to unlock multipliers.. http://www.strattoncomputer.com/amdcpuupadtm1.html
