broken "I" key on laptop

Got a circa 01-02 dell laptop that decided it didnt like its own "I" key.

It's actually my mother's, and the pc store here said it would probably be cheaper to buy a whole new laptop then to replace the keyboard.

Well, since I am home for a few more days I just wanted to know if this is true or not and if there is anyway I can fix it without costing an arm and a leg.

Ebay may be the best option

Stupid questions:

Does the keyboard port work? why not just buy a cheap keyboard and tote it with the lappy?

Also you can remap(rearrange) the keyboard to use a different key for your missing "I" key- unless you are a hardened touchtypist you should be able to relearn the remapped key arrangement fairly rapidly.

before ditching that keyboard.. why not try some electrical contact cleaner?? sometimes that can revive a dead key on a keyboard...
