IEEE = means?

Fellow Members

Out of curiosity, what does the acronym IEEE stand for?

I have checked a couple of dictionaries and have only come up with something to the effect " International Electronic Engineering Standard. . .'

Does anyone know the answer?

Although, now that I think about it, back in the days when I used to earn a few dollars polishing vacuum tubes well, not actually vacuum tubes -- there was a site -- I cannot recall the name ... it was an online dictionary for looking up computer terminology.

Does anyone recall the URL I'm referring to?

Thanks!

Brangwen

IEEE 1394 is the technical term for the commonly referred to "FireWire"

IEEE is the organization that comes up with different standards for electrical/computer technologies.

IEEE 1394 is another term for firewire yes which is a data port usually used for transfering digital video...but dont expect to hook up a monitor to a firewire port or anything

but it is not only firewire IEEE 802.11 is used for wifi and IEEE 802.3 is used for wired networking

EDIT: Doh I was beaten

OK, I better stop while I'm ahead!! Two different threads, and beating TWO different posters!! A first for me!!!

IEEE is everywhere though, but most of the time some "buzzword" ends up replacing the tech name for it. Just like FireWire, Wi-Fi, etc...
