A freind of mine ended up with an Hp Vectra VEi8.

She formatted the harddrive and decided to install Mandrake. After killing a cdrom drive, she finally got it installed.

The problem? No sound. I don't know if its something not set in the settings, or a driver problem. All I know is that after searching around, my brain really hurts and she needs sound.

Her sound card shows up as:
Cirrus Logic CS 4614/22/24 [Crystal Clear SoundFusion Audio Accelerator]

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

If it is a recent version of Mandrake, Open up the Mandrake Control Center.

(DrakConf from the cli as root or su, or it can be found in the Menu as Configure Your Computer)

Look under Hardware -> Hardware
Look for soundcard. Should be under Soundcard. Highlight it. On the right it should give info about the card.
Look at what module it is using and report that back to us.

Also you could try running draksound from the cli as root or su as well.

Well, from the manual on HP's website, it appears that the integrated sound is from the CS46xx family.

According to HP it is a CS4280 PCI Controller along with a CS4297 for Ac'97 sound. This falls into that module.

The one thing I would try it open up draksound. Change the module from CS46xx to snd-cs46xx or something similar to that. This will use the ALSA soundsystem instead of OSS.

Also, are there zero sounds? Nothing will play?

I tried setting it to snd-cs46xx (it added listed it as a optional module though i think)

And yes..... absolutely no sound. Nothing that is supposed to make sound will.

Sometimes I have to activate the gain control in kmix for sound to work. 2nd slider to the right of CD.

Activate? You mean have it turned up? Becuase, if so, everything but mic is turned up.

If you sill have the snd-CS46xx module loaded, type alsamixer at the cli.
Make sure nothign is muted (MM) will be at the top. Also make sure what you want is up there as well.

(Arrow keys to navigate. Up/Down to adjust volume. M to mute/unmute)
