Outdoors monitor doesn't come on

I have a IBM computer an MT 2140- L71, a Pentium II. When I turn the computer on the monitor does not come on. the light stays amber.

I have checked the monitor. It works fine when I hook it up to another computer I have.

I recently moved and the computer was jostled around. I also had high speed internet setup at my other location, which I no longer use.

I think it is the ethernet card that comcast put in the computer that is causing the computer to not communicate with the monitor. could this be the cause, and if so, how do I disable this to check to see if this the problem

Open the PC case up and reseat all cards, memory and connectors, especialy the video card.

Does the pc appear to boot other than no display or does it just sit there dead? You can listen and tell. And is there any beeps from the pc when powering on?

There are no beeps. The computer does not just sit there. I can hear the hard drive turning. the D drive light comes on and then goes off. I reseated all that you mentioned. but still no communication with the monitor

Did you tried removing the lan card and checking if it boots?
If so, could it be then the power supply not supplying enough juice to sustain the network card when installed!?

it sounds like a video card problem...either he zapped it or pulled it loose or mabey an irq conflict...it is a pci or agp vid card mabey he moved it to another slot...first take out the network card and see if that works...if not reseat the vid card....if that dosent work can you try it on another computer?????

I removed the card used for the high speed internet access and tried the computer. I hear the hard drive turning, but it does not beep.
I see the lights flashing at the keyboard, which I guess means there is communication there, but still the monitor light stays amber and does not come on.

I dont see anything inside the computer that is slotted and can be reseated -- like a sound card would be or like the high speed internet card that I removed.

This may sound stupid, but how do I find out where the video card is in this IBM Aptiva computer and how do I find out if it is an AGP or a PCI card.

The card was never moved so wouldn't that rule out an IRQ conflict?

And, as my first post stated, I have tried the monitor on another computer and the monitor works fine.

Is the video on board ie is the video card part of the motherboard? Or is the video card plugged into a PCI slot? Look at where the monitor is plugged in, is it plugged into a port right on the motherboard or is it plugged into a port that is part of a PCI card seperate from the motherboard.

Well, you can start from the beginning (as if you were building your computer) and remove every connection to the motherboard except the power supply, video card, cpu and ram and turn on the computer with just these minimal components (take out everything else and disconnect every cd drive and hard drive).

You could also try removing the motherboard from the case and running it outside the case with these minimal components already mentioned.

Also, did you cleared the CMOS just in case?
(maybe the jumper got loose when you moved it! :P)
