Weird problem. ASPI/ CDRW partially responding.

Hi I am newb.LOL

I really do not what I did, but I can not burn CDs. At first I bought a new CDRW drive. LiteOn CDRW-LTR52327s, yeah-yeah nice brand name, but it only cost $20 after rebates. And this thing was awesome. Was? Yes, I burned about 20 CDs and poof no more. So I checked the IDE cables, pins in the unit to no avail. So I figured this ol' jewel was just junk. I then reinstalled my old Creative CDRW-RW8438E, which is way slow, and it didn't work. Not sure what I did, played around with drivers etc. And it finally worked, kinda. I can simulate a notepad file, but if I try to simulate a compilation, I get errors;

Keep in mind that my device manager for both drives always indicated that the drive is present and working properly. Upon an ASPI check, it reads, "ASPI is not properly installed. One or more components have been replaced with older versions of the software.

Please tell me someone can help. I have been all over the web. This is my first forum visit on this matter.

edit-ignore the smileys above, it should read drive letter asignments. LOL

Welcome to the forum!

Do you think the Lite_on broke or somethign else went wrong somehow?

By the way, Lite-On is a good brand name.

I wonder what software came with each drive?

I know you arent supposed to have nero and roxio on the computer at the same time.

I think I would uninstall all the burning software and try the lite on again and re-install whatever software came with it.

Also, just in case, try another IDE cable.
And as JP said uninstall all of your burning apps and reinstall your favorite one and test.

Also, is it just burning CD's that doesn't work (I.e. can you still read cdroms and execute apps from there).

TNX for the help. Eliminate IDE cable defect, for my DVDrom works as master and I tried the drives as master on the cable as well.
The LiteOn (nice to hear of its brand being a good one) may be defective, but I will try it again since I got my other to work, partially at least. The LiteOn's lights blink as if it is recognizing, and the disc spins once inside.
Nero came with both of the drives. Different versions of course. The LiteOn did nothing, and the Creative reads and attempts to write partially. But check this out. The last time I reinstalled ASPI I noticed that when I rebooted, the little Windows Me installer poped up. The devices that I saw where associated with my PCI card (tv card). Is this what is interfering with the operation of ASPI?
Any ideas?
