Adapt older CPU to new Motherboard

Salutations and Happy Fat Tuesday!*

My friend just gave me an P4 1.6Ghz CPU which has the 423 pin configuration. I have a spare motherboard with the current P4 478 socket. The question is do they make a backward adapter that allows 423’s to run on boards with the 478 pin configuration or Is this just a stupid idea and I should find an older motherboard.

Regards,

Yes there is a 423 to 478 pin adapter. I did a google search and found some.

The ones I found only allow putting a 478 CPU into a 423 MB.

I had to go back and look again as I thought I read it wrong myself.

Yes, I’m aware of the 423 to 478 adapter, that’s what my friend used to upgrade his system from this older processor to a newer processor. I didn’t know if anyone made one that retrofitted a current incarnation motherboard so that it could run an older processor.

Does anyone know of a motherboard which features two processor sockets, one 423 and one 478? Probably would use a jumper to select the active processor socket. That might be interesting.

Ive never seen a dual motherboard like that.

go here for some socket 423 boards http://store.yahoo.com/justdeals/motherboards2.html

They do charge like $12.95 shipping for the first item and $3 or $4 for other items

Make sure when you look at the motherboards that you notice the memory types.

Most of the ones you can find now use PC133 or Rambus.

Both of those options sort of suck.

-----

You could get a socket 478 celeron....otherwise I think id rather invest my money in a P4 for the 478 board than to go backwards and spend money on a weak socket 423 setup.

Food

I have sticks of PC133 collecting dust, not to mention a slew of other computer parts to build a system or two. Maybe I’ll just bend my eye to the “Traders Forum” and see if a motherboard comes up for sale/trade anytime soon.
