how to setup internet with router on Windows XP Home

Ok I dont know what's going on here. I have disabled DHCP on the Linksys router and have the correct cable plugged in because I can share files with other computers on the network but when I open internet explorer I can't get internet access.

I think I can ping out to the internet from this desktop computer running windows XP Home but I cant seem to get internet explorer or any other program dependent on the internet (for example AIM) to work.

I have the correct IP address and subnet and manually imported the DNS server's IP address exactly like the other 2 laptops that are working perfectly fine.

The only difference that I can tell is that when I view "Network Connections" in windows control panel, there isn't and "Internet Gateway" icon on the computer that's not connected to the internet.

It was working fine before and i've tried to reinstall the NIC etc... to no avail.

can someone please help me. I've been getting by for the past week with just the laptop but I want this desktop to have internet access. THanks!

Please confirm if ping is successful or not. Try to an Internet IP address (216.109.117.108) and also by Host name (www.yahoo.com). This is important to know both results before proceeding.

I take it you have gone to Tools > Internet Options >Connections > Setup > and select Connect through a LAN?

You ping results indicate a DNS problem. Your DNS server IP is probably entered incorrectly.

thats what I thought also but I'm 100% sure that they're are not. I've checked and re-checked again and again because it seems to be a DNS issue but I dont think that's the problem

Aside from a potential DNS problem, I don't understand why you don't use the Linksys router to do your PPPoE login to connect to your provider, and enable DHCP on the router, then enable all your pcs to obtain IP addresses automatically. It would simplify things all around.
I am assuming you are using PPPoE to authenticate to your IP, but the Linksys does also permit you to use a static IP or PPTP as well PPPoE.

yes the Linksys rotuer allows me to do all of the things you mentioned and I do use the router to do the PPPoE login. THe problem is that I tried enabling DHCP and there were some issues with the router and wireless laptops trying to obtain the IP. So I just set it up manually and it works fine. The desktop computer use to work fine until about a week ago when someone messed around with it a little but I can't figure out if they did anything to it. All I know is that it doesnt work on the internet.

Edit... have you manually set DNS servers in the desktop's net settings? Delete them? Are you using a hosts file, or a utility that uses/creates a hosts file?

check. check. The settings are exactly the same as on the other working computers. except of course for the IP, but the only other difference is that the other computers have this icon in the "network connections" in the Control Panel that is under the heading "Internet Gateway" and is titled "Internet Connection"

That seems to make the difference. and I dont know How to place this on the desktop either. THe network works fine. Im sharing a printer and files etc... and I've even tried the Wizard to establishe the internet connection Icon but no luck.
