OpenGL GLX extension

I have installed Mesa and compiled but when I try to run a simple OpenGL/GLUT program I get a :
GLUT: Fatal Error in file: OpenGL GLX extension not supported by display: :0.0

Any ideas on how to fix this?

I found a libglx.so.1.0.4496 and a glx-3.so

Do you have the following line in the file "/etc/X11/XF86Config-4" ?

Load "glx"

Could it be your video card is not really supported or something similar?
What video card do you have?

Did you installed the latest Nvidia drivers for linux just in case?
Can you even run glgears?

What version of the NVIDIA drivers you have installed? Version 4496 gave this kind of error.

Is there a compelling reason for you to use Mesa software rendering rather than the hardware support offered by the GeForce?
