server bandwidth

Hi

I'm thinking of using my old computer as a web server. However, I'm not sure what load it can take. I have a 256kbps upstream connection and 512kbps downstream.

Specs

PIII 650MHz
256MB RAM

How many users at a time do you think my server would be able to handle with this?

A big part of it depends on what your are hosting. Just some html and small related pictures or are you doing streaming video, large files for download, etc...

It often comes down to just try it but there are tools out there to simulate web server load.

edit -> here's a few testing tools I found via Google http://www.softwareqatest.com/qatweb1.html#LOAD

Send a message via Yahoo to blubomber
Also remeber to check with your ISP to see what the maximum bandwidth you can use each month. There have been stories from time to time on people getting charged for using too much bandwidth.

Also, DVNT1 is right when it comes to what kind of website you plan on building. Make sure to post a link so that we can check out your work.

Been there - done that.

Back in the heydays of Napster my kids, without my knowledge, would leave Napster open all night.

In effect, my system was a server.

Cox threatened to quadruple my bill or disconnect me because of the bandwith usage.

Napster was gone the next day.
