harddrive headhead

i hope some one can help
my pc is driving me mad
and i need to do my work....arghhhh
here are the specs
mobo= kintetiz 7e
bios = v3.8
mem = 512 the pc133 type
hd = 40g 5400rpm
cpu = amd xp 1600
psu = 550w
1 cdrom
1 dvd/cdr
OS = windows XP +SP1
okay this is how it started..
last night my son reported that whilst online the pc just shut down and would not reboot, no beeps no nothing
i sorted this out by fitting a new power supply
whilst i had my pc open i decided to change my atx case aswell
Then when i powered up i started having real problems
i managed to sort most of them out but am stuck with this
my pc wont recognise my harddrive when its fitted in the IDE 1 socket
so i changed it to the IDE 2 slot where it will work
therefore i had to put the cd/dvd roms into the IDE 1 slot
the pc will show the cd/dvd rom in the boot up screen but not anywhere in windows
so i tried to change the ide primary/secondary slave order
when i run a cd rom and the hardrive off the same cable, the pc cant detect the harddrive at all in the boot up screen, it cant auto detect in the bios options either
- i have tried this various combos in both ide's, with the hd as slave or master.
therefore i have had to settle with the hardrive in the ide 2 slot and no roms
Both roms do have power as they can open/close but just cannot be detected by windows
In the bios when i try to set the cd roms i get the screen message
IC PRIMARY MASTER MT (the M is flashing)
SECONDARY MASTER T
Any ideas would be grastefully recieved

ps i have tried all the obivous thing, swapping cables, checking for pin damage, clearinmg the cmos, removing the battery but all to no avail
