When all else fails...

I needed to fix a friends computer. they dropped it off at my house and were to pick it up later.

They were running Windows 2000 Pro, but neglected to give me their password. great...

so in the username i typed "administrator" and left the password blank.

next thing i know im in with all rights.

...

I'm sure they just wanted to test if you were good enough to figure it out.

It's a common error made by those installing winNT kernel OSes. It's very easy to do, as it will let you skip right over the screen that asks for a default administrator password.

Unlike linux, which demands a default root password and won't install without one. M$ still has a long way to go before windoze becomes a secure OS, IMO.

Cheers

Thats about as funny as the most common systems administrator password. Some of those guys have real ego problems.

Oh yeah the password?..........

Was just looking at links about admin passwords, and found this gem in an M$ support article:
Quote:
Sometimes, the prompt to configure the Administrator password is inadvertently skipped, leaving the Administrator account password blank. To determine if this has happened, attempt to log on as Administrator with a blank password.
Followed immediately by:
Quote:
The Windows 2000 security framework is designed to fulfill the most stringent security requirements.
'Nuff said.

Cheers

What I do is ask them for something they will remember. It's their machine, after all.

Some interesting security stuff about admin passwords in this article.
