My First Build ...My first problem

I'll start by listing components

>CPU AMD|2500/333 ATHLON XP BARTON
>MB ASUS A7V8X-X/LAN KT400 RTL
>GIGABYTE|RADEON 9200 128M
>HD 40GB|SEAGATE ST340014A
>FD 1.44MB|SONY MPF920 Black
>DDRAM 256MB PC-3200 GD3200-256V
>CDRW 52x32x52|SAMSUNG SW-252FRNS
> Installing Win98

The problem im having has to do with "INVALID MEDIA TYPE READING DRIVE C". Im trying to format after running FDISK (yes I did restart the computer) thats when the message "INVALID MEDIA TYPE READING DRIVE C". I went back into FDisk and Displayed the Partition info screen, thats when I noticed under the heading "SYSTEM" it reads "UNKNOWN". I'm not positive but I believe it should read FAT32(WIN98). One other thing at the beginning when the computer is counting the memory it reaches the MAX and recounts over and over until I hit escape. ??

Hey Mike..The first thing I would do is to reset the CMOS and then go into the bios and set it to "factory or system defaults"
Insert your "start up " disc then run "Fdisk" and format the hard drive. You should then be able to install whatever operating system you want.

Under system when it says unknown that is because it hasn't been formatted. The constant recount of the ram would indicate a problem. What, I'm not sure.

Some boards are shipped with the clear cmos jumper in the clear position and must be moved to the normal position to run. Have you checked that?

after you fdisk you need to format by using the FORMAT command...the file you need on the disk is format.com it should be there if it is a standard win 98 boot disk...if you don't have one though you can obatin one a www.bootdisk.com ...but if you boot from the win 98 cd (make sure cd is before harddrive in the boot sequence in the bios) it will format it for you during setup

I guess Ill give resetting CMOS a try. as for formatting I tried several times FDISK-reboot-than format thats when the "INVALID MEDIA TYPE READING DRIVE C" message shows up. One thing I did type INVALID....message in the google search engine and it came w/ 3 possible faults the closest to mine was a BAD HARDDRIVE. Let me know what you think.

Welcome to TechIMO!!

Well one way to find out is to run diagnostics.

Diagnostic Software (SeaTools)

and

Installation Software (DiscWizard)

When you ran fdisk, did you create a primary dos partition?

Everyone thanks for the help and suggestions. It turned out to be a bad HardDrive. DAM you SeaGate Talk about Luck. I drove my Girl to work and I heard on the radio about a Computer discount show at a local Collage. I stopped off and picked up a HDD (samsung) and it worked. AS for the recounting of Ram over and over. One of the Venders told me to put it back into "QUICK BOOT MODE". Problems solved.

Thanks everyone....
