Fatel Exception OE Errors
Can someone please help me? I seem to be getting error messages after my computer is on for a while, normally when I try and run a scan disk, virus scan, or defrag. They normally read something along the line of : Fatel exception OE at 0028:C00455AE in VXD VFAT(01) and then alot of other numbers.
It comes up on a blue screen when this message appears telling me to hit any key to shut down the program running, or to restart my computer.
Normally it will not do either one. I have to manually shut it down with the power button. When I do then I end up with another blue screen teling me that a Fatel Exception OE at 0028:C18C6404 in VXD NA VEX (02) + 00045404.
When I try to hit any key at this point I end up with another error message: Fatel exception OE at 0246:015F47FB etc. etc. etc.
I do not understand all of this, and not sure where to go from here. Can you please help ASAP.

Sounds like it's time to re-install Windows !!!! Just insert your copy into the CD Rom and run the setup. When asked to save your present configuration click "YES" and that should cure all the confusion.

Well I sort of figured that. I sure wasn't wanting to here it though. I also have Norton Internet Security /Anti Virus in this machine. Would that possibly be the cause of it? I use this program on my other computer , and I haven't seemed to have a problem with it. I did have a problem installing that perticular program on this Compaq in the beginning, So I uninstalled it from the control panel, and of course wouldn't you know there was an error.
Went to the Symantec site: and downloaded a removal tool for Internet Security 2003, ran it, and reinstalled the program in safe mode. I didn't see no other errors come up after that with that program.
So you feel this has something to do with . windows and not the memory, or the hard drive, or any of the other possible drivers that is in this machine. If so I could at least be happy for that one.
Thanks for your help, I do appreciate you taking the time with me to answer my question. |

I used Norton for YEARS but found that it hogged resourses and went to a free anti-virus...which has caught quite a few on my computers. http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_index.php
For a firewall, many use Zone Alarm, an exceelent program and it's free.. http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/home.jsp
Sounds like a software deal to me. When you re-install , the windows CD will check your drive and fix any errors ( if the drive isn't hosed ) Then all should be fine.

Thanks pickel for your help. I think I will try and uninstall Norton in that computer again, and then rerun the windows disk. I will also try the free software that you suggested.
Oh by the way will the upgrade to windows 98SE disk work for this reason, or am I going to have to have the full windows program to correct this matter?
By the way what do you mean by ( if the drive isn't hosed)? You mean harddrive failure, or that the harddrive may be going out? (If this is what you mean by that then how would I know if that is the case?)
I apologize for asking so many questions, but I am really interested in learning about these things, and how to correct them. I do know a little, but not as much as I would like to.
Again - thanks

I'm not sure myself, but I believe it will work. By the way what do you mean by (if the drive isn't hosed)? You mean harddrive failure, or that the harddrive may be going out? (If this is what you mean by that then how would I know if that is the case?)
Yes, that is what he meant..."hosed" is lingo used at the forums to express concern about something that may have died or is dying. I apologize for asking so many questions, but I am really interested in learning about these things, and how to correct them. I do know a little, but not as much as I would like to.
No problem about asking questions...we expect someone who is interested in more than the basic "do this or do that" to ask questions and learn.
Have you tried running the System File Checker utility that comes with Win98 and SE? This could help. Click on start >> Run, and in the resulting screen..type SFC in the Open: window and click OK.. this will bring up a screen that will allow you to run a system scan for bad (or missing) system files (or, extract a certain file from the install CD etc.) When running SFC and it finds a problem and wants to replace a file..you will have several options, and one of them will be replace the file..you will need your Win98SE CD in your CD drive and browse to that drive.
Work with SFC a little bit and see what happens and/or tell us where you are at... or if SFC does or does not find anything wrong.
Norton will cause problems..many have discontinued using Norton (and McAfee) because of the problems affecting an otherwise smoothly running machine. I still use NAV, but have had to uninstall/reinstall many times to get the glitches out. Again - thanks | |

I found the compaq diagnostic program and have ran all kinds of test on the harddrive. All of this passed with no problems, so I guess apparently the harddrive is fine, not hosed. I really had nothing to loose on this one as I have nothing important on it.
I will check out the System File Checker utility though because I am interested in how it works.
Update on problem with Fatal Errors for now seems to be fine though since I uninstalled all Norton Products.
There is one thing I did notice though that when I look at what all the system is trying to start up that it is trying to load several of the items like the country selection, PTSNOOP.exe, Rundll 32.exe-Power Profile, twice. I have uncheck the extra ones of these also.
What would be the reason for the double loading of these---any ideas?

I would have to give you all a thumbs up for helping me with this problem. So far so good.
Also thank you for letting me know what the ptsnoop exe is. I really had no idea, I just knew that it just didn't sound good, like spyware are something.
I haven't had a chance to check out the system file checker utility yet, but I will. I will let you know how that goes, especially if I have any problems.
Thumbs up to you all. Sure wish I would have known about you guys several months ago...I could have really used your help...I messed with that one so much that I just gave up and took it to some one else.
Thanks again.
