Extracting file cause hard drive to turn off, then back on.

I went to go extract the zip file i had downloaded so I could star the eve of destruction installer inside. But during the extraction, my hard drive shuts off for a second, then spins back up. Everything then freezes. I am not 100% sure what is wrong. On restart windows xp does a scan disk, but doesn't find any errors. Its a farely new drive, a little over a year old. Its a 40gig WD. I'm thinking its either a faulting hard drive, or I have to many thing connected to my PSU, but then again, everything would shut off right?

Run a SMART status check on the drive. That'll tell you whether the drive has seen an internal condition being off.

Using the drive manufacturer's diagnostics utility.

als try googling for active smart.. it's a program that will monitor SMART staus from windows. (15 day trial)

I had a maxtor that was going south but the Maxtor Utilities (MaxBlast) said the drive was perfectly fine when it truth is was hosed. took a bit of arguing with the Maxtor Rep to get a new drive but he did finally understand what I was telling him. Funny thing was. The day I got the new drive and installed it the old drive went south just as I was transferring a few not too important things

The utility said the drive passed the smart check.

The drive loads games just fine, i can download stuff to it off the internet. It was just that one zip file that was giving it problems.
