I am not too sure of the prospects of putting a new video card into a laptop.
What you both need to do is find out if the laptop has an "s video" port on the back of it....that is a port that sends video to a tv....most modern tv's and maybe vcr's also..have an "s-video" IN port....so you would just hook the s-vid out of the laptop to the s-vid in on the tv.
An s-video port looks like a mouse port..small and round.
This is a little diagram of what the s vid port looks like on the laptop--->

Ok...I looked and looked but could NOT find a picture of the rear of a laptop that shows the s-video port....so instead I have a picture of a desktop video card....it has two black "ports" that are s-video ports

If youre laptop has a port like that then you can hook it to a tv with not a lot of hassle...especially if the tv has the match s-video "in" port. Then its a matter of getting an s-video cable (walmart probably has em)
If the tv doesnt have an s-vid in..then there are adapters etc to make it work.
Usually the laptop will have a "function" switch..or "fn" on it that will make the keyboard keys do alternate function. The alternate functions are shown in little blue letters usually by the keys....so on my laptops I think the f10 switch is the way I choose which display option to use....I hold down the "fn" key and then the f10 toggles between choices.
Usually you can choose
1) laptop lcd display (of course that is the normal choice)
2) s-video out...or "external" display...this sends it to the tv
3) both...shows it on the laptop lcd AND thru the s-vid out to the tv.
