XP upgrade

can someone tell me if i should be able to upgrade a 98se box to XP home with the full version disk of XP home
if not how about the full version of XP Pro?
I know the bootleg version that was around of XP Pro Corp
did upgrade but I'll not use that (pirate works)
I just tried to upgrade a 98se to XP home yesterday with the
full version and it did not give me that option?

I don't believe you can. You need to do a clean install. At least that's the way it is with oem versions. Not sure if you have a retail version.

i wonder what kind of xp (is it oem???) sevenal has.

i was always under the impression an oem cd would allow an upgrade as well, unles it is a branded oem. very curious...

I wouldnt upgrade from an OS, I would just make a clean install since its safer, and your system will function better. But yes you can upgrade from both Windows XP Home and Professional.

I don't think the oem version will allow it because it is supposed to go on a new machine and therefore should not have an OS on it already. That's just my opinion and not a fact though.

I heard that also, OEM versions will only allow clean installs while Retail versions allow clean and upgrades.

i knew the oem version lacked the \support and \valueadd folders.

but if the oem does not support upgrades then it seems either setup.exe is modified and/or \i386\win9xupg is removed.

interesting...

Yes it must be OEM
I burned a copy of the OS from work.
That pc was built by a local pc store.
I went to #9 software and purchased
the MS XP Home
License (you only get the STICKER)
with the keycode to attatch to your machine.
So I'm sure this is the case.
I'm sure if I had a full versioncopy of XP Home
It would give me the option to upgrade.
I am however going to reformat and install
from the disk I have.
I was questioning this because a friend
wants to upgrade and has too much on his box to format.
His Words Not Mine?????
Thanks for the feedback .
You folks as always ROCK!
