installing remotely

This refers to a university assignment i have been issued and i only need to know if it is possible and if any extra software would be required.

If i had a server running slackware linux would it be possible to remotely installed windows 2000 on the workstations attached to it.

Cheers Michael

Yes and no. You can easily remote to other computers using *nix, provided they had some for of networking installed on them TCP/IP based, but running win32 native apps can't be done in standard slackware, so you couldn't run the setup installer for win2k whilst in slackware.

It may be possible to do this using a windoze-emulating program like WINE or WIN4LIN. I don't know is it would actually work, though, as these emaultaors are picky on what they will run. It would take some testing to see what would work or not.

Another option is running the win2k setup files from the clients, over a network. If the win2k files are on their own partition on the slackware PC (or on a CD shared on the network), and each client has a bootable disk which allows it to connect to that win2k setup partition, then you could do it that way. But each install would be manual I think, for each client, and you would need to access each client to actually run the setup over the network, so it wouldn't all be done by remote.

Just my thoughts. Never tried to do it this way, so it's all theory.

Cheers
Mick

I have never installed windows remotely--though I understand that it can be done. I have no idea how. That said, if you could normally install from a share on a windows server there is no reason why a slackware/samba share could not do the same. Or have I completely missed your question?

Happy slacking
