LITEON 8X Dual-Format Rewritable DVD Drive (LDW-811S/8)

Dear Friends,
I’m new to the whole DVD burning or Ripping (I don’t know the difference between the two) thing. I’d like to transfer VHS & 8mm tapes to DVD’s and I’d like to be able to make copies of DVD’s as well. By the way if you have any suggestions as to the best Hardware, Software, and in general the best way to do it (keeping cost in mind) I’d appreciate that too. My main reason in asking for your help is in purchasing a DVD burner. Best Buy has one, a LITEON 8X Dual-Format Rewritable DVD Drive (LDW-811S/8) that’s on sale for $120.00 (after rebates). I’d like to know what you all think of that model and of that price, especially if any of you have had first hand experience with that Burner. Well I won’t take up anymore of your time.
Thanks & God Bless
Uncle Bob

I have that exact drive, and it works perfectly for me. I would check Newegg for prices before purchasing the drive from BestBuy. Newegg may have that drive for around $100 with free shipping, Newegg service is awesome!! Search TechIMO for several articles and posts on DVD ripping and burning. Enjoy, but make sure you research the methods for DVD backups, you need software to burn and rip movies. I use DVDShrink 3.1 for ripping and Nero 6 for burning. Have fun!

I have the same combo as Kreuzemissle. It's hard to beat and easy to use. DVD Shrink is awesome. Nero 6 can also handle any disk burning task you throw at it. I'm also creating my own DVDs from my family 8mm videos, and Nero makes it easy to do.

Definitely checkout Newegg. I got an NEC 2500A 8X DVD burner from them a couple of weeks ago. $110 with free shipping. Got here in 2 days. I've been able to burn 4X DVDs at maximum speed with no coasters. I tried the same with 2.4X cheapies from CompUSA and had to drop back to 4X speed, but they work. I'm almost done backing up my DVD collection and started burning my family videos last night. That's a project that will take me well into next winter

Sounds like a good combo and setup. The price differnece you have to justify your self... with Newegg you save about $20 depending on the day and then wait about 2~3 days for your DVD. If anything is wrong you have to mail stuff back and bla bla bla... for an extra $20 you can drive back to the store same day for a fix up but you have to wait for your re-bates. You make the call
