not a problem!
I have 4 old PI 166's with 32 meg each running in a little
PC training lab all on a ROUTER and cable modem. a couple run Win 95 and a couple have been upgraded to 98.
The people that get on them for software and hardware instruction never complain.
Fairly zippy on cable actually!
I think it is a worthwhile project for you and one that you will learn new skills from.
so "GITUSUM" !!!!
lol
have fun with it, if you get stuck on something just post here.

Thanks for all the tips everyone I'm getting alot of help here which is going to lead me to my next question. My primary computer is a Compaq Presario 500mhz Intel Celeron computer with 94mb RAM. I'm figuring now that I have this project to complete for my mom I might as well get RAM for both of our computers. I've always wanted to get RAM for my Presario but I really never had the resources to do it. My question is how do I know which or what kind of RAM to get for either of my computers? I've opened up my tower before and installed new CD-ROM drives so I don't thing installing RAM should be too hard. I hear installing RAM is pretty simple anyway. So are all RAM sticks pretty much the same will I have to find a perfect 'fit' like a car part or something? THX!

O yeah where would be the best place to buy my RAM? THaNKs.

The easiest way for us to help you, without going into a long discussion of ram types etc....is just for you to post up two things....

the model number of the Presario
and the serial # of the gateway.

with those we can tell you exactly what ram to buy.

And no, it isnt hard at all to put the ram in..and there is no installation involved, only physically putting the ram into the slots and making sure it click down firmly.

Let us know those 2 things and we can tell you exactly what to buy.

Consider an upgrade

While you have the box open, you might consider an upgrade.

1) Find out the make and model of the main board.

2) Go to the manufacturers site and see if they have an upgraded BIOS code for you.

3) Consult with webpages that deal with upgrading and overclocking such as Jan Steunebrink's outstanding Overclocking websites.
http://web.inter.nl.net/hcc/J.Steunebrink/

4) Flash-upgrade your mainboard's BIOS.

5) Definitely invest in all the RAM you can afford.

6) Consider an upgraded CPU.

Places like z-buy, upgrade-solution and baber can give you some great deals on very inexpensive CPU's or even CPU/Mobo/RAM package deals
http://www.baber.com/baber/products/entry.htm
http://www.upgrade-solution.com/

7) If you want to go broadband, it is very likely that you will need a network card to talk to the DSL / Cable modem.

8) If you overclock, pay close attention to proper flashing procedures, CPU voltage settings and CPU case cooling.

Yes, it's a bit of work, but for some, a lot of fun.

Cheers,

KJ

DON'T FLASH THE BIOS UNLESS IT IS NESSACARY

your 500mhz will need pc66 but you can find pc100 easier and it will underclock itself

the 166 may need simms but look at them if they are really tiny and have groups of two kindof together then you will need that
www.compgeeks.com is a great place for older parts and you can usually find some simms there

Ok..either someone will look it up for you or I will later if I dont forget, lol...I am on the way out the door.

You can go to gateways site and plug in the serial number and it will tell you exactly what ram you have/need.

Same for the hp..just go to hp.com or compaq.com and click on "support" then plug that model # into the search engine and you can browse thru till u find the info,

JP

for the Gateway:

Memory Slots/Type 2 Slots/Buffered SDRAM DIMMs - 8,16,32,64 and 128 MB
Memory 256 MB maximum, 16 MB standard

For the compaq:

Presario 5822
slots 2 (2 banks of 1)
max. memory 256MB
installed memory 96MB removable

based on your choices, we recommend...
module size module type
128MB SDRAM, PC100

So it look slike your systems will support up to 2 x 128 meg chips of PC 100 for a total of 256 meg
