CD-rom Help!

Hey I have a cd-rom drive and just recently it stopped working. It will open and close and windows "sees" it but it doesn't register that anything is in the drive. I put a cd in and it doesn't try to read it it just sits there. Plz help. I don't mind having to buy a new cd-r drive it would just be nice if I can get this one working

Samsung 52x

My friend had an old BTC 24X CD drive do the very same thing. Our solution, put in a new drive. Problem fixed.

I agree with pickel.

For kicks, if you have a bootable CD (i.e. OS installation), I'd go into the BIOS and make the CD-ROM the first boot device.

Put the CD in and boot. If it don't read and attempt the installation process it's a gonner.

Yah It won't boot from CD. I had to pull a driver out of my other computer just to install windows. Ok so it is pretty much gone =P. BTW pickel if I stick a cd in it says nothing and when I go to my computer it says D drive then when I click on it it says : please insert disc or something.

The laser has died....and after that, the machine will "see" the drive, but nothing can happen when a disk is inserted because there is no laser beam to find the CD and begin reading.

LASER's in a CD or DVD ROM drive are solid state devices..simular to a LED or transistor...they do burn out

I got an Artec DVD drive once that did the same thing right out of the box. I failed to keep the receipt and ended up with an expensive paperweight...
