RedHat9 compressed file problem

I am a total Linux newbie. The Linux version I am having a problem with is RedHat 9.

I have to load a program in which the load program contains a command to uncompress a file.

uncompress -c - < $TMP/usqlcs.z.$$ > $TMP/usqlcs.$$ 2> $TMP/inst
all.er.$$

It comes back with an error that uncompress is not found. I have searched for an rpm to load the uncompress utility on the Linux box, but have not found one. I have tried to use gzip. That comes back with an error stating the file is not a recognized gzip file. I have loaded this progrma fine on a customers box running RedHat 8 with no problems.

Does anyone know where to find uncompress for RedHat 9? I have tried searching RedHat's site but found nothing.

hello,
the compress command is old - very old. i think it was widely used in the 80's and maybe the 90's especially on big unix machines. we have it at work on HP-UX and solaris...

anywhy - what are you trying to install? the single 'z'' tells me it is indeed a compressed file.

What about zip? It comes on most Linux distributions. That might work.

pbharris - the load program of the program I am installing uses compress. I don't have a choice in what I am using.

lynchmob - I have tried unzipping the file using gunzip. It comes back with an error message stating that it is not a recognized zipped file.

Anyone else know where I can get the pmr for compress/uncompress for RedHat 9?

Well thebeav http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3/stat....i386.rpm.html , check if this helps you out. BTW compress/uncompress is almost as hard to find as the shar/unshar utilities .

There is a utility called zip that comes with most Linux distributions for the compressed files gunzip can't handle.:
Code:
NAME
zip, zipcloak, zipnote, zipsplit - package and compress (archive) files
