burning DVD+RW
I was just wondering if I need to format or burn a DVD+RW any differently from + or -R media; if I plan on erasing the disc in the future? I will want to back up movies and also some important files. Thanks.

Normally, you can burn it just like a regular DVD+R. You'd then format it to erase data for subsequent use. If you are using packet-writing software, for programs like Direct-CD (Roxio) or InCD (Nero) where you can save a file from any application, the disc needs to be formatted prior to use.

I am using Nero, what exactly do I need to do differently to burn a movie or back up files onto a DVD+RW? I would assume the process is basically the same for either? Sorry to trouble you guys with such basic ?'s, this is all pretty new to me. Thanks for any help!!

Burning a DVD movie to another DVD requires you to decrypt the DVD before burning it which requires an external Program. Burning say word documents to a DVD is a simple task of opening nero and draging the files you want to the DVD and pressing burn. If you are interested in burning movies I have a few guides here @ techIMO DVD Backup Guide 1 DVD Backup Guide 2 DVD Backup Guide 3 www.doom9.net also has a ton of guides

Thanks phenious, I have looked at your guides and I have been ripping and burning movies using DVD-R media. I just wanted to make sure that I can use the same procedures with +RW media so that I can rewrite as needed in the future.

Ok missunderstood ya Yes you can. The only requirement is that your hardware supports it and I dare say that a few OLDER programs only support one format or the other but I think even those few have updates by now but I cant think of any off the top of my head. So party on with the legal back-ups

I'm curious about osprey4's comment about the need to format the RW+ disk if your using Nero's InCD or Roxie's DirectCD. Is that necessary? Would like your input phenious. I haven't tried RWs yet, just +R and -R media. Your guidance has been tremendous for this newbie to DVD burning. Thanks to you, I went with DVD Shrink and Nero 6. I'm almost finished with my DVD collection backups, and just started creating my family videos on DVD. Thank you!
Robert

I think what Osprey4 is refering to is the ability to format a disk with Roixo's Direct CD format or Nero's In-CD format. This isnt like erasing a CD but setting it up for a different burning style. This allows you to use a CD or DVD like a flopy drive. So if you are in word like he said, you can just select the DVD-Rom and click save there and it will burn it there right from word. I think you have to have EZ-CD Creator or Nero (depending on which version you use) on the machine for it to work for burning but I think most computers can read it. I havent had much use with it as I tried it when it first came out but I was to impatient for it to format my CD @ 2X so i just burned with my software. Osprey4 have you used this stuff much? Did I miss anything? Just guessing but I would bet that if you formated a DVD with the In-CD or Direct CD formats and managed to put your movie on it, I dont think any Box top players would play the DVD but only way one could find out is to test it.

That's pretty much it. The file-at-a-time type programs, like InCD and Direct-CD, use a format called UDF. It's handy for turning your burner into a big floppy drive, but if you want to share that CD with anyone, they MUST have or install a UDF reader in order to see the files and read them. Obviously, this wouldn't work with any DVD set-top player.
