Media Whose DUAL-CHANNELIST of Them All ?

Check out RobetRichmonds telling Article about the forthcoming (?) KT880 K7 Chipset with Dual -Channel technology and ask, "Has Via upstaged nViadia, in a dramatic comeback ?"

http://www.techimo.com/articles/i157.html

Is it worth waiting to see the new 64bit Dual Memory Controller in their Mobos-to-be before buying an Nforce2 now?

Or is this another "Crush" debacle when everybody waited for the First nVidia dualchannel Chipset --only to find them a disapointment.

Do I correctly understand this chipset will support FSB400 + DDR400 RAM in a dual Channel memory architecture ? And that new, very expensive AMD CPU's Won't be needed as Dual-memory channel64 can work with the conventional XP CPU's, including Bartons?

Ah ! The shape of things to come !
The drop in prices of nViidia nForce2 chipset Mobos !

Some budget Nf2 boards go for around $60 or so. I dont think the mainstreem will drop that much. THe high-end like deluxe maybe. Knowing via though its prolly like the Kt400 chipset. More BS then Performance. The nf2 wooped that AND fully supported ddr400 and 200fsb. Kt400 only supports two sticks of ddr400 making 3rd bank useless when fast mem is used. And UNLIKE the name implies it-never supported 200fsb (no 3200+) and also STILL uses dividers not agp/pci bus lock. And I also dont think they unlock older bartons multi either. I think Nvidia isnt too worried. They already moved onto a NF3 chip after all.

Eh, it's too late for them. I don't know what they are trying to accomplish with this move.

Yeah, not much more room to improve, even with the faster controller, what good does this give to the 400Mhz FSB?
It may likely increase the performance to a little over the nforce 2 motherboards. However it isn't going to exceed the nforce 2 chipsets even tho since it is newer and faster, will it really be a selling point for athlon xp systems?

I'm sure there will be many people in need of a new system and will go for it, but it would be much wiser to wait or go for pentium 4 or athlon 64. Waiting still is imo a better idea.

Well the question than resolves to:Should onsumer go for 64bitAMD CPUs + NF3 to handle it.

Ah ! But have you looked at the MEMORY Requirements of the 64bitMobos with Dual-channel memory lately?

Here's the crux:Got any Registered and ECC quality DDR333 or DDR400 lieing around the house?

Have you seen the prices to get the special memory? And if you want fast timings, well hard to find with Reg/ECC memory, which is usually made for Servers.

What would it cost to supply 2 X 512 Mbs of quality Registered and ECC memory modules? 2 X 1 G ?

So if Via can come back with a Mobo that would outperform the nVidia nForce2 offerrings, it would have the niche of mere mortal performance seekers with fairly convential stuff like XP333 CPUs and PC2700 lo-latency non-Registered, non ECC memory etc.

This is probably the "sweet spot" of the market right now--and a major consumer of AFFORDABLE upgrades.

Stay tuned

Well that memory is for servers because for larger modules, having registered ram is pretty much required, while it is around as well as ECC. They are geared towards stable/error free modules. Which if you go with a lesser brand you dont always get away with error free operation.
However cheaper modules tend to be not worth the band for the buck in many cases.
Corsair, crucial or kingston generally sell their sticks at a much higher price which going for Reg/ECC isn't usually too much more even tho if you do go with high quality memory you may end up spending 300+ dolalrs for 1GB worth.

I just find it odd they would release a new chipset for processors that are becoming slowly outdated, and will be phased out since there will no longer be a 462 pin.

well thee is wo possibilities--and I hope the market, rather than "planned obsolescence" wil decide which will prevail:
1) the current Socket and XP32bit Cpus will be stopped in production;
2) continuing and profitable denand wil kep it going.

I've seen some 64bit CPUs priced at $700 !

YUCCHO !
