Kids Basic OS question

I'm planning to add another smaller HDD to our desktop PC and use it as a slave drive.
Question:
Do I have to install WinXP Home on the slave drive also?

I have formatted the drive before using the DOS command.
In fact, it still has Win98 SE on it.
To format in Windows I guess I select the drive, right click and choose "format"?

Can I use it then without the OS installed
on it for back-ups AND other applications?

If you want to format the drive after you properly install the drive and boot up:

"Right" click My Computer > "Left" click Manage > select Disk Management > select the new drive (probably disk 1 not 0) > "Right" click and select Format.
