Kids Setting up a wireless/wired network

Hello all,
A friend gave me a Linksys Etherfast Cable/DSL router m/n BEFSR41 and an Intel Pro/Wireless 2011 LAN Access Point m/n WEAP2011NA. I have a cable modem set up properly (before hooking up these 2 boxes) and working beautifully on one computer. My eventual desire is to network another desktop computer (wired network) and have wireless capability for my notebook computer. For now I just want to get the internet to come up on my host computer and I'll get the other computers networked next. Here's how I hooked it up with no success...
1: Cable modem plugged into wall with coax cable.
2: RJ45 from cable modem plugged into router port marked WAN.
3: RJ45 cable from router port 1 into AP RJ45 port.
4: RJ45 cable from router port 2 into computer network card (the one that was originally plugged into the cable modem.

At this point I just want the internet to come up on my desktop that this is all plugged into.
I know there must be some software or setup issues that I must deal with but I received no documentation at all about these devices so maybe one of you can help. What is next? Drivers? I am running Windows XP and I thought it would recognize the devices automatically. It does not seem to.
Thanks....

Well, you'll need to figure out the IP address of the router, then likely log into and configure it for DHCP. That's probably all that's stopping you.

Most come out of the box as 192.168.0.1, but my USR one was 192.168.100.254. I'm not sure how to tell what it's IP is, unfortunately. Your pal should know though if he had it setup previously.

How do I do this? I'm a rookie at networks and such. Thanks.

Here's the User's guide for the router (PDF format)

Here's the link to the quick install guides

The IP address for your router is 192.168.1.1, type that into your browser to access your router. The users guide will tell you how to reset the router to the default configuration so that you can start from scratch with setting up your network.

If you don't need the wireless access point right now, I would disconnect it while you are setting up your network. You can configure it later.

If you run into any snags while doing the setup, just fire off another post

edit>> Almost forgot... If you've been running a software firewall like ZoneAlarm, you should uninstall it while setting up the router and reinstall it later if you want to control outgoing traffic.
