How do I use my broadband connection to make/receive telephone calls?

Hi all,

I know this can be done, but I know not how. It'd be awesome if I could get an assigned number/VM. Verizon wants $40 just for a basic line...no. ( I have RoadRunner )

Thanks in advance for any help.

EDIT: Vonage is one company, for example.

Our cable provider offers unlimited local/long distance for $35/mo. You should just search for VOIP providers.

Actually, my company uses VOIP for overseas calling and the quality is unbelievable. One of co-workers was in Germany and he called one morning. I asked him why he hadn't gone to Germany, thought he was calling from his office in the building next door to mine. No, he was in Germany.

the telco will tell you that 911 is not available if your cable is down. However even though you do non have a local telephone acount you can still call 911 emergency services. It is the only thing you can call and the phone must be hooked to the phone line not the modem for the cable. So just pick up a cheap handset and plug it into the wall for emergencys.

Wow, that's a great tip, WB.

Considering how many people have cell phones, it's certainly worth trying one of these cable phone services and just use your cell phone for backup.
