Intermittent DSL

I'm a new subscriber to SBC/Yahoo DSL. Since installation, I've had intermittent disconnection. The problem had been worse since Sunday. The service would crash after about two hours and stayed crashed. No power cycling of the DSL modem or rebooting would work. Maybe, it would reconnect after a few hours.

I discovered, it would reset almost immediately if I logged onto the internet via DIALUP a couple of times. Log on. Log off. Log on. Log off. The DSL modem would reconnect.

Explaining this pecularity to the service center, they suggested I remove the line filter. I had a spare filter, so I changed it out. The connection has been stable since.

I guess I just posted this as sometimes we forget the problem may not be in the computer!

Yeah, if you had the line filter installed in between the DSL Modem and Phone line, then that totally explains your problems.

If the filter is supposed to filter out the line noise(the DSL signals) then how is the modem supposed to connect?

That's kind've weird though how it would connect successfully if you dialed in though!

Glad you got it working...

DSL noise filter goes onto the phone, fax, etc., line NOT the line going to the xDSL modem.

Also, if you have the newer, higher speed Expert Plus package (1.5-3.0/384 but actually uncapped at 6.0/606 unless problems occur), and are running too fast for your line quality, that can cause loss of synch (connection) and very poor speeds when connected.

Remedy is to have the ASI techs cap your line speed to something lower that provides your connection with margin of error for line conditions.

Uncapped at 6.0, my d/l side uses 92% of the available signal range, and affords almost no margin when line quality degrades (misty/wet weather and poor insulation somewhere along the route)... at 4.0 cap, I only use about 70%.

Example:
Quote:
ADSL Down
Relative Capacity Occupation (0 - 100%) 92
Noise Margin (0 - 31 dB) 8
Transmitted Signal Power (0 - 20 dB) 20
Signal Attenuation (0 - 60dB) 42
Max Attainable Bit Rate on Fast Channel (Kbps) 5952
Fast Channel Bit Rate (Kbps) 5440
Fast Cell Count (Kbps) 32003866

ADSL Up
Relative Capacity Occupation (0 - 100%) 64
Noise Margin (0 - 31 dB) 16
Transmitted Signal Power (0 - 20 dB) 9
Signal Attenuation (0 - 60dB) 24
Max Attainable Bit Rate on Fast Channel (Kbps) 992
Fast Channel Bit Rate (Kbps) 608
Fast Cell Count (Kbps) 22064584

I think the bigger kicker on this profile is the fact that some of the upload speeds are not quite available and cause some problems for some end users, as well as the lines maxing themselves out searching for frequencies to use. The whole idea behind capping is to give you some "headroom" for physical line changes. Such as a frequency shift in the spectrum. . In most cases I would rather give you a stable fast signal than one that can throttle if conditions deteriorate.

I think and this line looks like it would handle it, like to set this at 4032/384 and set the redback to that as well. So the traffic is equal and balanced on both sides of the equasion. with the redback set to a 6016kbps signal if it drops to say 3200 on a whim the redback is going to still "blast" your line 6Mbps worth of data on a 3Mbps line is going to cause you some real headaches in the long run. With the lower speeds the redback and DSLAM would be in sync and should maintain the line better than having them possibly become mismatched due to conditions.
