9600 problem

my brother has an ati 9600
he reformatted his computer and just installed the drivers for his card. now he gets no signal input after windows loads. when booting he can click on vga mode and it will work, but only in 640x480 and 8bit color. if he switches to 16 bit color the screen is black and shows a pic of a monitor, in 32 bit it gets no signal.

he has a 14" proview lcd monitor.
windows xp
saphire ati 9600

Sounds to me that the drivers did not load or install correctly.

What are the driver file details listed as?

ok, when he uninstalls the drivers it works fine, but when he reinstalls the driver (tried different downloads) he has to use vga mode again...

Did he use the ati drivers or the saphire?
I used the ati drivers for a saphire card and they worked decently.
If not try these listed here: http://www.sapphiretech.com/downloads/downloads.asp

The same thing happened to me, I had heavily stressed my system (running 12v rail at 13.5v during a overclock) my 9500pro did the same thing, I let the psu cool down,I was originally running 4.1cats so reverted back to 3.8 cats, later i upgraded to 4.2 cats and everything has been fine since. I traced mine cakc to a dying psu, I doubt yours is similar as this is following a format, but if you are in the position to test the PSU you may wish to try it.

well after downloading different drivers from different locations, and uninstalling and installing, he finally got it to work. now the next problem. he downloaded the newest bf1942 patch. whenever he starts the game, the monitor turns black and says (in its broken english) "VGA mode no support". im guessing that its trying to open it in 600x480 since the monitor cant handle that.

any way to fix it besides bringing another monitor over and seeing if he can change the resolution?
