Gateway 600ygr Laptop problem

Have a Gateway 600YGR laptop.

1st. Laptop will not use laptop screen, will display on external moniter.

2nd. (There in "no" operating system on it at the moment)When you turn it on it starts with the Win XP screen that is supposedly loading WP (left-to-right progress bar) then it goes to a screen that says "setup is now restarting" then without giving me the option to do anything it either

1. shuts itself down (more often than not) or
2. Brings up an error screen that reads "Not enough virtual memory or paging file quota available to complete the specified operation"

Then it shuts down.

Any Suggestions??? I still have all the original Gateway disks(including the applications and XP disks)

Boot is set to CD ROM, then Floppy, Then HDD. (Which it was the whole time)

It does NOT shut down by itself with out the hard drive which is very encouraging (I think?)After you exit the BIOS screen (still without HDD) it goes to a DOS like screen that reads the following

(version info)
(copyright info)
PXE EGI Media Test Failure Check Cable
PXE M0F Exiting Intel PXE ROM
No Operating System Found

Hope that helps.....

When you boot from XP CD (Without HDD) it goes through about the first 3 steps after the "setup is bieng restarted" screen, the last I think is asking me if I want to run automated system recovery.

When you boot from XP (with HDD) it says, "Setup is bieng restarted", then goes right to the error message

"Not enough virtual memory or paging file quota available to complete the specified operation"

and then shuts down, (right after that it's either the HDD or the fan that starts running at top speed, I thinks its the fan because it's pretty loud and has a smooth sound to it)

Also, it never says "Checking your system"

Sorry it took me so long to get back.....

ok, put in a boot disk, ran FDISK, here are the results:

First I'll list what my partition looks like.

PARTITION:1
STATUS:A
TYPE:EXT DOS
VOLUME LABEL:
Mbytes:19061
USAGE:100%

That is the only partition.

When I run FDISK, from the first screen, I choose

option #3 "delete partition or logical drive"

I CHOOSE
Option 1 "delete primary DOS partition"

IT SAYS
No Primary DOS partition to delete

I CHOOSE
Option 2 "Delete Extended DOS partition"

IT SAYS
Cannot delete Extended DOS partition while logical drives exist.

I CHOOSE
Option 3 "Delete Logical DOS drive in the Extended DOS partition"

IT SAYS
(in the middle of the screen) No logical drives defined
(at the bottom of the screen) All logical drives deleted in extended DOS partition

I CHOOSE
Option 4 "Delete non DOS partition"

IT SAYS
Partition selected is not a non DOS partition

Ok so thats pretty much all of FDISK

When I choose FORMAT C: from DOS it says

Format is not supported on drive C:
Format terminated

So unfortunatly Im stuck again.

Any help would be greatly appriciated

I have encountered this problem and a Low Level Format fixes this. Just use your harddrive utility and wipe the drive and then do a reinstall of WinXP and choose the quick format and you are on your way. BTW.. turn on LAN BOOTING. that might cause a problem with windows xp lan drivers.
