Really strange Issues... XP related

I have went through many of the threads here, found some on the Blue screen of death, UNMOUNTABLE BOOT error, and well, they didnt help me out much...

My hard drive is 2 days old.. Western Digital, I recently bought the quick restore disks from Compaq. I used them once, and it worked for the past 2 days. Today out of no where, I recieved an error message upon rebooting my CPU after finishing windows updates install.

I tried to re-run the quick recovery CDs 2 times, both times, same error message, UNMOUNTABLE BOOT what ever it was.

Downloaded the boot disk from a website listed here, the XP boot disk, made the 6 disks, used the little F10 funtion to go into BIOS, but when i tried to run the boot disks it told me it could not find drive A.. so that being said... I really am in the dark. Is there some way to make a boot CD vice a boot disk? CD ROM seams to work just fine..

I have spent the last 6 hours trying to figure out what to do..

By the way, this is a laptop.. that computer on both hard drives, wont work at all.

What model laptop? R the restore CD's the ones with Xp on or do you have a seperate XP CD?

The trick with Windows update is to only install the "Critical" files (or is that what you did?), drivers and such are usually very basic and the rest is bloatware!

The laptop has nothing to do with the CPU that died.

The restore CDs are the ones with XP on them. You dont have an option as to what to install from the way it does it. It does everything for you. You just put in Disc 2 and Disc 3 and go about your business. Didnt see anywhere, where there was a choice about what files to install.
