A website has blocked my IP?

Hello all, I hope I'm posting in the right place.

I was a member on a forum for 2 years and recently some heated debates have gone on and when I tried to log on it said the admin has blocked my IP address. Now I'm really not computer savy in the least so I guess I really don't understand everything. From what friends of the site have said is that the admin posted that I recently created another user id and had posted under that name which is a big nono and anyone caught doing so will be banned from the site. I did not do this so I wonder if they're lying or if more than one person has my IP address. I guess I always thought only my computer would have its own address but now I'm not sure. I have emailed the admin to try and get them to give me an explaination but they have not gotten back to me.

It's driving me crazy not being able to access a site I have been apart of for 2 years. Please believe me when I say I was a very *vanilla* poster also. I always tried to stay out of arguments. I like this site as its the same set-up as my former

Please any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also is there a way to still be able to just view the site?

Hi TMS

It depends on how the site is set up. For instance at TechIMO many forums are open to be viewed by Guests, but some forums will not allow guests to veiw posts even.

But if the forum has banned your IP address, you won't even be able to access the site from your computer as a guest, even if it is allowed. You would need another computer with a different IP address to do that.

If I were you, and you really haven't knowingly broken any rules, I'd wait for the admin's return email and sort it out.

If you are in a college campus or dormitory, and large corporate network, or some other place with a large network, it's quite possible someone else may have the same IP address.

Anyhow, feel free to make yourself welcome here while you get it sorted out. Just check the FAQ's and you'll be fine.

Cheers
Mick

Ditto Mickwish on this one. When I was at my University which has hundreds of computers in a lab, if one person messed up, the whole University got banned from particular forums.

Thanks for the welcome and the replies.

The website is set up so anyone can view it. But yes seeing as my IP is blocked I cannot even do that. I'm just one computer at home so I'm not on a network. Is there a way for me to find out what the ip address is from a poster? I guess I'm just trying to figure this out on my end to *clear my name* sort of. I will not be returning to the site because of the comments that were made against me but I still wanna figure out how they thought it was me.

Is my ip address limited to just my home computer or could someone else, say in the same town or state have the same one. Sorry, I'm still confused as to what an IP address is.

hm what abou proxy servers? doesnt they work? or will the IP be still the same?

i dont really know that!

Creatures

normally only one person has a special IP except you have a variable IP and always get a new one, but that would solve the problem on it's own!

Ok so I guess what I'm asking then is because I'm on a cable modem and its only my home computer I would be the only person with that IP address?

What is a proxy server?

a proxy server is AFAIK a waypoint, if you have a proxy, you always send and get the information over this special server (so they will know what you do! so dont forget to delete the proxy server again) i think it also blocks your old IP and you'll get the proxy server IP (because he is the server who connects to other sites)

Without Proxy: You - ...... - Server
with proxy: You- .. - Proxy - .. - Server

dont care about the ...

This is strictly a hypothetical but apossibility of what happened. you did not use your pc for a while so your ip address was released by the server. It was then issued to the next person requesting an ip address. They screwed up on the forum. Or they are blocking your isp completely.

Go to the library and log on as a guest and talk to the admins.
